About Thomas

Who is Thomas Adams?

Thomas was born on 17th August 2009. Until 20th January 2011 he led a normal, healthy life. He attended nursery 3 days a week and caused the usual toddler amount of mischief there and at home. We had the normal parental anxieties about him – what do you do when you’re told by the nursery that he bit someone!? – but we had no idea what would hit us.

Thomas was diagnosed with an anaplastic ependymoma after a fit on 20th January. This is a rare, aggressive brain tumour that mainly affects children. It has already come back once despite surgery and chemotherapy. The next stage is more aggressive brain surgery and proton therapy in the United States. This therapy is Thomas’s last chance to fight the cancer.

We wait to hear whether all the tumour gets removed at his surgery. If it is all removed we can begin to make plans for the US.

How can you help us?

Thank you so much for the thoughts, cards and gifts we have received in the last few months – we have been overwhelmed. Over the next few weeks as the situation about Thomas treatment plan becomes clearer we are going to put together some suggestions for links to charities and other suggestions that we have.

Who are Becca & Ted?

Becca & Ted are Thomas’ parents. Becca is pregnant and due to have our second baby on 29th June. Becca has been off work since Thomas’ fit. Becca & Ted both work as junior doctors in Merseyside.  They have had tremendous support from family and friends and are so grateful to them and to everyone else who have given them support over the last few months.

    Dear Becca & Ted,

I just wanted you to know that we are thinking of you both and Thomas and the rest of your family at such a stressful and emotional time. You both sound like you are being incredibly strong which is admirable in what must be the toughest test any parent can face.

Our thoughts are with you and especially for little Thomas.

What a shock I got when I saw this link on Facebook. I remember how worried we were when Lisa was admitted to hospital a few weeks before William was born. It was great to see you (Ted) in the hospital, especially as you made time to chat to us, and put us at ease.

Our thoughts & prayers are with you all, and we will be happy to help in the future, in whatever way we can.

    Best Wishes,
    Dan, Lisa, Adam & William

  33. Kate O'Connell says:

I am so terribly sorry to hear about Thomas and his fight. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. I hope he gets the best care he can have. I see that you seem to have something in the works already, but wanted to also mention a Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennesse, USA. It’s called St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. They are the leaders in pediatric cancer and they treat any accepted patient, regardless of ability to pay for their treatment. I just wanted to be sure that you knew about it, in case there was something they could do for Thomas. My husband and I donate monthly to the hospital because of the miracles the create.
I will keep Thomas in my thoughts and I hope for the very best for him.

Prayers from across the pond… Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
